Michael Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/leavitt-bio.html visited the Interoperability Showcase at the HIMSS Conference in Orlando Florida last week. He spent 45 minutes taking the Showcase tour, in which healthcare vendors simulate a scenario of a patient moving through the healthcare system, accessing his electronic medical information at various points of care. The Interoperability Showcase is sponsored by Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE). In closing, Secretary Leavitt asked IHE to contemplate a world in which the patient owns (the intellectual property of) his medical data. He praised IHE for their important work in pioneering standards by which healthcare providers and patients can electronically and securely share critical patient information. |

Sometimes a single, simple use case can bring diverse efforts together. The HL7 Public Health and Emergency Response SIG (PHER) found that immunizations seems to be, of the multitude of use cases Public Health encompasses, “one thing” that many San Antonio HL7 Working Group topics converged on in January. We were extremely pleased that so many joined us for our late-scheduled Friday Q1 cross-working group discussion on the use of messages vs. Structured Documents to support an HSSP Decision Support Service using IHE content models. Therefore, we propose a full day of topics on the immunization use case, as a vehicle to bring us together with our close working group associates, and focus on a continuum of topics. We propose to organize the four quarters of Immunization Day along the lines of the new TSC groupings: into Infrastructure, Domain Expertise, and Structure and Semantic Design. Q4 will be devoted to discussion and next steps. We invite working groups most closely associated with those topics to join us in a joint session (hosted by PHER) for that quarter. All, of course, are welcome to send representatives to any or all quarters. |

Immunizations is becoming a driving focus for the PHER SIG. Given activity in IHE, HSSP, and with the Immunization DAM, approaches taken in immunizations may serve as models of approaches for other public health domains. |
