2010-January-17: IHE profiles co-authored by Software Partners included in Meaningful Use rule PDF Print E-mail

The US Department of Health and Human Services issued a release just before the new year regarding regulations governing the EHR incenvitves program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.   The proposed interim rules, headed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services(CMS) and The Office of National Coordinator for Health Informaiton Technology(ONC), outiline a definition of 'meaningful use' and the standards proposed to achieve this.   Professionals and hospitals looking to participate in the EHR incentive program would need to demonstrate 'meaningful use' in their technology and implementation, defined as improvements consistent with objectives set forth in the regulaiton.

The regulations include IHE immunization standards profiles in support of the objective to improve population and public health, co-authored by Software Partners Immunization Content (IC), PIX, PDQ, and Patient Demographics. These industry standards and specifications for EHR systems are part of many outilned to support a system's goal of demonstrating 'meaningful use,' and ultimately enhancing interoperabilty of healthcare informaiton technology.

2009-Sept-9 CCHIT’s Preliminary & Comprehensive Certification Programs: Which One Will You Choose? PDF Print E-mail

"The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) announced earlier today that it would launch two certification programs on Oct. 7. Providers need to understand not only the difference between the two programs but the consequences of choosing an electronic health record (EHR) product certified in one program over the other.

"...proponents of EHR systems believe IT helps create better patient outcomes, which is why there is such a push for adoption. Physicians need a robust system that will enable them to deliver quality care to their patients, above and beyond the requirements to qualify for federal stimulus funding."

2009-July-21 HITSP Standards, 'Meaningful Use' Merge in Specs PDF Print E-mail

HITSP published a 115-page document on its online wiki.  The document merges its previous work on information exchange standards with Congress's eight "meaningful use" requirements on EHRs.

 Some of the eight requirements include:

  • "Technologies that protect the privacy of health information and promote security in a qualified EHR...
  • The utilization of a certified EHR for each person in the U.S. by 2014...
  • Technologies (such as encryption) to render identifiable patient information “unusable, unreadable or indecipherable” to unauthorized individuals when such data are transmitted on a proposed national health information network.
  • A nationwide health IT infrastructure for the use and exchange of healthcare information."

2009-July-27 Summer's No Vacation For Pediatricians PDF Print E-mail

"Every year, pediatricians typically see about 95 patients per week, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. At nearly 5,000 patients per year, four health forms per child, and about eight minutes per form, that means one person could spend 333 workdays a year on health forms alone.

"...Online medical records or e-mail communication between pediatrician's offices and schools could help cut postage costs and wait times."
