The Patient Identity Resolution Web Service is a set of web services that allows a patient's record on one system to be matched against the same patient's records on other systems.

Its advanced matching algorithm has been in use since 2000, on databases of over 1 million patients. It is highly tunable to accommodate specific population characteristics.

The Patient ID Service supports several transactions, to be used in different situations as depicted here:

Patient Identity Resolution

The Patient Identity Resolution Service conforms to:
  • the HSSP Service Functional Model Specification for Entity Identification Service (EIS) initial submission;
  • IHE transactions for Patient Identity Feed, utilizing HL7 2.3.1 messages; and
  • IHE PIX and PDQ transactions, utilizing HL7 2.5 messages.
Patient Identity Resolution Service includes probabilistic matching software and an interface to access a database.

It performs functions both as an IHE “Master Identity Service” and an IHE “Cross-Reference Manager,” as described in the discussion in IHE ITI-1 Section 5.4.   This allows PDQ transactions for the IIS Master Identity Domain to return a list of matching Demographic items for all Patient Records in the IIS when required for human record matching decision purposes.
