The White House just announed the Beacon Community grant awards that will fund efforts to acheive meanigful healthcare improvements through technology. UC San Diego is one of the 15 Beacon Communities being awarded $15 million for efforts to: "Expand pre-hospital emergency field care and electronic information transmission to improve outcomes for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, empower patients to engage in their own health management through web portal and cellular telephone technology, and improve continuity of care for veterans and military personnel through the Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record initiative." The outcomes of these 15 communities hope to serve as models for future implementations in other areas throughout the nation.
