For online healthcare to work, information has to be available on a carrier - a network, like the Internet. The Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) and the Public Health Information Network (PHIN) are developing efforts toward a Carrier for Healthcare. A Carrier for Healthcare will enable stakeholders, including patients, to "plug in" to a standard interface. Imagine if, in order to connect to a web site, you had to build a special interface from your computer to that web site.
